The Conference

Thank you for attending the APCNDT2017
Prof Mihara was awarded BS, MS degrees and the Ph. D. by Tohoku University in 1980, 1982 and 1988, respectively. He belonged to graduate school of engineering of Tohoku University, Department of Materials Processing as research associate from 1984 to 1995 and associate professor from 1995 to 2007. In 2007, he moved to University of Toyama as professor of Dept. of Mechanical system, graduate school of Engineering and returned to Tohoku University in 2015. He is now a Department head of material science and engineering of Tohoku University and a vice president of JSNDI.

His major is materials evaluation, located in the interdisciplinary area of material engineering and fracture mechanics and measurement engineering. He will detect and sizing the defect including a crack in the structural material non-destructively using the ultrasonic method. Material strength evaluation and assurance of the structures will be applied combining fracture mechanics. Especially in the ultrasonic measurements, several new transducer and equipment have been developed. He also interest in new experimental and analytical acoustic fields investigation techniques for the improvement of the measurement. He is focused on acoustic imaging system, ultrasonic visualization, phased array system, non-linear ultrasound and so on.
Prof Len Gelman, Professor and Chair of Vibro-Acoustic Monitoring at Cranfield University, UK, the Executieve Director, International Society of Condition Monitoring; Chairman of the CM Conference Group of the Condition Monitoring Technical Committee of British Institute of NDT, the Honorary Editor of the International Journal of Condition Monitoring, Past Immediate Past President of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (USA).

He has more than 35 years’ experience in vibro-acoustical monitoring, predictive and preventive maintenance, maintenance planning and scheduling, shutdown maintenance management, machinery failure analysis and prevention, risk assessment, hazard identification and condition monitoring of complex mechanical systems (e.g., rotating, reciprocating machinery, gearboxes, bearings, etc.) both in industry and academia.

He is also Chief Designer on numerous industrial and research maintenance contracts, including contracts from the USA National Academy of Sciences, USA National Research Council, USA International Science Foundation, USA Civilian Development Foundation (twice), USA MacArthur Foundation, Lady Davis, Israel, Centro Volta, Italy, UK EPSRC, UK Department of Trade and Industry (three times), UK Royal Society, Rolls Royce (four times), SKF (two times), Scottish Energy (two times), Caterpillar (twice). He is a Fellow of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT), UK Institution of Diagnostic Engineers and International Association of Engineers. He is also the author of over 200 publications (including 17 patents and 2 book chapters) and more than 25 plenary keynote conference papers in the area of predictive and preventive maintenance, machinery failure analysis and prevention and condition monitoring.

Prof Gelman is Chair of 2007 World Congress on Engineering Asset Management, Honorary Co-Chair of 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 World Congresses of Engineering and Chair of 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 International CM Conferences. He is the General Chair of the First World Congress on Condition Monitoring. He has participated in the technical boards of numerous international maintenance conferences. Len is a Chief Designer of numerous technologies and engineering prototypes for proactive maintenance. He was awarded Rolls-Royce award for innovation for development and implementation of the novel technologies for predictive maintenance of gas turbines.
Dr B. Stephen Wong is a Part Time Lecturer with Nanyang Technological University. Singapore. He has lectured at NTU for 30 years, with the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, where he presented course modules and conducted research in Non-Destructive Testing. Prior to this he worked for 11 years in the UK, conducting research and development and auditing sub-contractors in NDT. During this latter period he worked 2 years for Clarke Chapman - International Combustion Plc Ltd, a pressure vessel fabrication company and 9 years for Rolls Royce Plc Ltd, a gas turbine engine fabrication company. He has a PhD in Physics from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, UK and has published over 90 papers in various journals and conferences mainly in non-destructive testing. In 1997 he set up the Non-Destructive Testing Society Singapore was its President from then up till 2014. He is a Member of the Overseas Advisory Panel for the British Institute of NDT for Singapore and is a Technical NDT auditor for the Singapore Laboratory Accredition Service. He has collaborated with various companies (including RSAF and GE, USA) on NDT projects for many years. In 2014 he published a book called Non-Destructive Testing published by Lambert Academic Publishing.

Dr Younho Cho received his B.S. and M.S. mechanical engineering degrees at Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea and earnedhis Ph.D under the tutelage of Prof. Joseph. L. Roes in the major of ultrasonic NDE in the engineering science and mechanics department, the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State Univ.), U.S.

He has worked as a professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Pusan National University (which is one of the ten flagship Korean national universities), South Korea since 2004. Additionally he leaded the NDE group along with the appointment of adjunct professor at the civil and environmental engineering department, Northwestern University, U.S from 2011 to 2013.

He directed the World Class University Program on Advanced NDE sponsored by the Korea National Research Foundation from 2009 to 2011.

He has involved in Academic Societies. Especially he has been serving as one of the executive committee members of ICNDT(International Committee of NDT) since 2012. He currently has been appointed the president of the 20th World Conference of Nondestructive Testing and Board Member of International Congress on Ultrasonics, respectively. In addition, he was a chair of the NDE division of the Korean Pressure Vessels and Piping Society (KPVP) and a Chairman of the Ultrasonic Division Committee and as well as senior board member of the Korean Society for Nondestructive Testing (KSNT).

Located at the centre of the Asia Pacific Region Singapore is one of the smallest countries in the world, but commands an enormous presence with its free trade economy and highly efficient workforce.

The conference and exhibition will be held at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre adjacent to the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel and facing the Singapore River.

Hot and humid with little variation throughout the year.  Average daytime temperature is 31⁰C (88⁰F), dropping to around 24⁰C (75⁰F) in the evening.  The monsoon season can bear down pretty heavily from November onwards, so be prepared for rain on a daily basis during this period.
     
Nosmoke   No Smoking
Smoking is not allowed in all air-conditioned places, such as malls, restaurants, pubs etc.  There are designated smoking areas in some entertainment outlets and open-air eateries.

The standard electrical current used is 220-240 Volts AC (50 cycles).  Primary Socket type is Type G British BS-1363

Water can be drank straight from the tap as water here passes World Health Organization standards. Bottled water are easily available.
